In just 4 years, The Langley is quickly becoming a classic golf event run by the Northern California PGA with the name of legendary golf professional Jim Langley attached to the event. Jim was the long time professional at Cypress Point in the Monterey Area and is now retired.
The event honors a local golf professional along with a notable golfer of national status with ties to Northern California. This year, R.J. Harper the Senior VP of golf for the Pebble Beach Company and PGA-Tour standout Johnny Miller will be honored.
The event has been played at spectacular golf courses that include Meadow Club, Lake Merced Country Club, Spanish Bay in 2010 and for 2011 Silverado is the site. The first year had Arnold Palmer honored with a gala dinner at City Hall in San Francisco with the local honoree Jim Langley himself.
The event is a major fund raiser for the Foundation of the Northern California PGA with proceeds being directed to junior golf, stroke victims using golf to improve their health and the Folds of Honor Foundation that assists families of fallen soldiers.
Ken Venturi was honored in San Francisco in 2009 along with long time Fresno Professional Steve Menchinella and in 2010 it was thrilling to have Tom Watson conduct an interview with his good friend Sandy Tatum as the two Stanford grads were honored.
Major sponsors for the event have been CIG (Capital Insurance Group), The Frys.com open and American Airlines. Golf professionals from Northern California join amateurs playing in a fun format.
