Stanford St. Jude Championship Opening Rounds

The TPC Southwind is not what it used to be.

David Toms literally changed the landscape of the course. In 2003, he shot a 20-under par 264 and quickly after Southwind made major changes.

The course cut par down to 70 and added 200 yards for a total of 7,244. The additions and subtractions to the course equal higher scores.

Jeff Maggert won last year at 9-under par. The course ranked as the second toughest on the PGA Tour last year only behind 2006 US Open site Winged Foot.

This year’s first round only had seven players breaking par with Frederik Jacobsen and Adam Scott sharing the lead at three-under par.

The second round scores improved because of rain softening out the course. Rain again came in the middle of the round which suspended play for almost three hours. Because of the rain delays 26 players could not finish their second rounds.

One of those players who did not finish is 22-year-old Andrew Buckle. The Aussie shot an even par 70 on day one then took advantage of the soft course on Friday. With three holes remaining, the Aussie is six-under par on the day and is only one shot behind Adam Scott at 7-under.

A player who did not seem to care about the rain or the delays or about anything golf-related was John Daly.

Daly shot an even par 70 and was in a tie for eighth place after the first round.

It was reported that Friday morning Daly was awaken by his wife who wielded a steak knife. Shortly after the two got into a fight and it appeared Daly showed signs of a scuffle. Playing in a hot red collar-shirt and red hat, he had some red scratches on his face and looked lackadaisical all day. He went on to shoot a four-over 74.
