Names and pairings to watch on the PGA-tour
About once a week I will look at the pairings for the PGA or LPGA golf events to see if I can find interesting pairings and there are times that some really stand-out.
The USGA has been famous for the last few years for making U.S. Open pairings that are fun. You know…like three guys named Jim, or really long hitters together. This is nice to see, especially with the reputation of the USGA being quite stuffy and far too serious some times.
Recently a great pairing jumped out at me. Tim Herron (aka Lumpy, and not known for being a gym rat) was paired with Chris Couch. What if Aree Song was ever paired with Vijay Singh? So now can you “see” how I’m entertained by this stuff. What if Aree Song married Vijay, took his name, then got divorced, and married Jeev Singh? She’d be Aree Singh Song Singh. And after that, what if Vijay Singh and Jeev Singh were paired together, wow…what would the sign boy do now?
There is a new player on the Nationwide Tour (oh…The Nationwide Tour just played two events in New Zealand…should they now consider changing their name?) and his name is Chris Downes. I wonder if he ever played with former PGA player Brett Upper? You’ve heard of Glen Day, a very nice player. One wonders if he has been paired with Jason Day on the Nationwide Tour? I checked to see if they were related, but there is no bio for Jason Day. Maybe his “day” will come someday?
Like the above geography lesson about the Nationwide Tour, you are aware that the Canadian Tour has been opening their tour in places like California and Texas. Seems odd to me, and I wonder if Craig Kanada has played on the tour from Canada? Shoot… he should be exempt there.
I’m sure that Justin Rose and Justin Leonard have played together and I wonder about Boo Weekley and Bo Van Pelt? Nice shot Boo, thanks Bo…anytime Boo. How about the no name guys that use initials…KJ, JB, DJ, and how about Jonathan Byrd? I guess it sounds better than John Byrd.
Then we have generations to worry about. Davis Love III, Billy Hurley III, Doug LaBelle II, Frank Lickliter II, Tom Pernice Jr., and don’t forget David Morland IV. What is the difference between being Jr. and the 2nd? What if Davis got married to Maggie Will on the LPGA Tour? She’d be Maggie Will Love III. Why are there no 2nds or 3rds after the names on the LPGA Tour? I thought they liked their Moms. If Wendy Doolan was named after her Mother, why wouldn’t she be Wendy Doolan II?
Then we get into guys that may not get along. Did you know that Tom Watson’s current wife used to be married to Dennis Watson, who is now on the Champions Tour? Watch for their pairing soon. Did you know that Tom Pernice Jr. is best friends with Vijay and he once asked the PGA-tour to test Tiger’s driver? So Tiger is likely not sending greeting cards to Vijay or to Tom Jr. Maybe if he became Tom Pernice II, Tiger would come around.
And I guess the last thought I will leave you with is…How would Eldrick Woods have done on tour? Not likely as well as Tiger Woods. Nice drive Eldrick…it doesn’t have quite the panache.
