The Masters, a Tradition Like No Other…
Bobby Jones would be quite proud of what his Masters has become. The splendor, the beauty and the great drama of the back nine on Sunday, is really special. Also, the fact The Masters is the most watched Golf Tournament in the world, isn’t too bad either.
Because we know the holes and what’s possible (good and bad), some would say The Masters is too predictable. They would be so wrong. The past few years have seen changes to address the length of today’s players, and we’ve also seen some rough grown much longer.
Spectacular Masters moments and golf shots stick in my mind. Ben Crenshaw and his charge on the back nine after the funeral of his mentor Harvey Pennick, then seeing him burst into tears after winning, was both prophetic and amazing.
The back nine battles of Johnny Miller, Tom Weiskopf and Jack Nicklaus were great toe-to-toe events. And what about the playoff with Fuzzy Zoeller winning, and Larry Mize breaking the heart of Greg Norman? Would Chip Beck lay-up again if he had the chance? We’ll never know, as he has not been on that stage again.
Jack Nicklaus winning in his late 40’s, with his son by his side…wow, bring me a hankie. And then there was Tiger with his father Earl. What a moment for the heir apparent to take the torch passed by Nicklaus, who took it from Hogan and Jones.
I know where I’ll be on Easter Sunday afternoon. My son and I will on the couch knowing we are watching history develop. Happy Easter and save me some leftovers, I’ll be busy.
