Master Your Game to be a Champion

To be a champion at the Masters it seems obvious you need to have mastered your game in every way possible.

Let me first say, I have not played Augusta even though I was offered the chance once, but got stiffed. I’m still upset about that to this day.

To me, it appears that accurate shot making, distance control and creativity in your golf game is the equation for victory, at the Masters or on your home course.

Let me start with putting. One of my good friends, who has been at Augusta, says that many of the greens are like putting off the roof of your house. A comment similar to that got Gary McCord fired from the Masters telecast.

Putting becomes crucial, and to have great feel and imagination is of utmost importance. To get to the correct spot on the green requires a perfectly hit iron shot to the right spot. This to me is so pivotal because it will leave the player with easier putts and less chance of disaster.

Next one needs the great tee-shots along with the ability to move the ball in either direction. One must drive it well to achieve the above by leaving the right location for the approach shot.

Lastly, one needs a variety of shots because there is trouble looming with a tricky bunker shot or the long chip and run like the one Larry Mize sank against Greg Norman.

It will be fun to watch, and come Sunday afternoon, the best player this week will have mastered a great course.
