A weekend of legendary golf

This past weekend had some golf from which legends are made, and the legends that played made for a story unto themselves.

Lorena Ochoa is about to become a legend, as the current number one player in women’s golf. She comes from two shots back to win by a mile, at 18-under par.

Zack Johnson wins for his third time in his career, this time in a playoff. This wins comes in Atlanta, after his great win at Augusta. How about a legend from Iowa winning all of his three events in Georgia? That is the stuff legends are made of.

How about an Irish Legend?…I can hear the bag pipes now. Home grown Padraig Harrington wins the Irish Open…how great is that! Aye…an Irish Legend.

What about Dr. Dirt (aka Brad Bryant) winning in a playoff on the Champions Tour over E.W. Eaks. Dirt is a legend for every player…if he can do it…how ‘bout me…

Now let’s look at what existing legends did this weekend. Juli Inkster is in the junior legend category. At 46 years old, she pulls off another top-5 finish on the LPGA tour. There are players about the age of her own children that she is competing against, and as I nick-named her a few years ago…”The leading Mom” on the LPGA-Tour, she has been noted as a great influence to the young women on tour.

As a footnote, I tried to confirm Juli’s age, but the LPGA-Tour does not list the age of women on their bio sheets, nor does it list their weight. Seems a bit odd doesn’t it? In the case of the PGA-Players, age is listed just behind height and weight…how ironic…My wife says…”women don’t like their age spread around… or their weight.”

Now the true legends. Gary Player entered the Nationwide Tour event this weekend at The Cliffs in Greenville South Carolina, apparently his new home and site of his office. He shot 82-76-76. Not bad for a guy who will turn 72 in November.

Raymond Floyd entered the AT&T classic near Atlanta and must have played pretty well shooting 152 for two days, albeit missing the cut. He and his son Robert Floyd tied, and oh yea…Raymond is 64 years old.

But we need to look down the leader-board on the Champions Tour for the legendary pairing of the year. Lee Trevino and Seve Ballesteros were paired on Sunday and you know they played their hearts out, battling to a tie for 54 holes. Seve did come out on top on Sunday with a 73, topping Trevino’s 75. This is what the Champions Tour was meant to be and I hope we have some legendary pairings like this again. It brings back some great memories from days gone by.
